Amsterdam is altijd het centrum van joods leven in Nederland geweest. De Sefardische joden kwamen vanaf de 16e eeuw naar de stad en later volgden de Asjkenazische. Het joodse leven speelde zich met name af op het eiland Vlooienburg rondom de Jodenbreestraat. Gevlucht vanwege godsdienstvervolging vonden de joden in Amsterdam een nieuw thuis in een relatief tolerante samenleving. Zij waren echter uitgesloten van gilden en kwamen zo terecht in typisch joodse beroepen. Velen werkten in de handel of diamantindustrie.Tijdens deze stadswandeling door de oude jodenbuurt komt u op plekken die aan de rijke joodse geschiedenis herinneren.
