Het joodse leven speelde zich met name af op het eiland Vlooienburg rondom de Jodenbreestraat. Gevlucht vanwege godsdienstvervolging vonden de joden in Amsterdam een nieuw thuis in een relatief tolerante samenleving. Zij waren echter uitgesloten van gilden en kwamen zo terecht in typisch joodse beroepen.
