A sky the color of thin metal opens before dawn as the van eases out of Cusco and the Andes begin to stretch—raw, steep, and honest. By 6 a.m. you're at Cusipata for a hot Andean breakfast, then to Cayrahuiri where a line of cuatrimotos (four-wheelers) waits. Helmets on, a 15-minute practice run loosens stiff limbs; then the machines climb, wheels clinging to dusty tracks, lungs battling the thin air.
