You step out of an air-conditioned minivan and the countryside widens—rice paddies flatten into a quilt of green and the hum of the city falls away. The morning is spent at Cu Chi: narrow earthen mouths in the ground, a hand-built maze of tunnels and crude trapdoors that once hid soldiers and supplies. The earth here is thick, reddish-brown laterite; the tunnels sit low in flat terrain so expect stooping, crawling and tight spaces in parts of the site.
