You push off from a low concrete launch and the water closes behind you like cool glass. King's Bay lays out flat and wide, dotted with marshy edges and the pale mouths of springs; an occasional manatee breathes slow and deliberate, a grey back opening the surface like a gentle question. The launch is close to downtown Crystal River, where citrus groves and the old fishing docks point to a history of subsistence and sport on these waters.
