A Land Rover grumbles up a switchback, tyres kicking up chalk dust as the low limestone slopes of eastern Crete open into broad, wind-scoured fields. The convoy threads small villages—plane trees draped over village squares, stone churches with red-tile roofs—then climbs toward the Lasithi Plateau where scattered windmills once pumped the earth dry. The day moves from machine to village: a short stop for raki and local meze in Kastamonitsa, a stroll beneath the shade of a monumental plane tree in Krasi, and a pause at the Greek Mythology Park near Psychro, gateway to the Dikteon Cave.
