Read the full experience

Located in the heart of Salem, Massachusetts, the Family Broom Making Workshop at The Witchery offers an enchanting hands-on experience for visitors of all ages, especially families seeking a memorable, creative excursion. Salem’s rich history as a center of witchcraft lore and colonial heritage provides the perfect backdrop for this one-of-a-kind workshop, where guests gather to craft their own rustic witch’s brooms from scratch. This immersive class blends Salem’s cultural mystique with artful craftsmanship, making it a standout activity in this historic coastal city. The Witchery, situated at 61 Wharf Street, has been serving the Salem community and visitors since 2016 as a witch- and woman-owned business with deep ties to local artisans and sustainable practices. Their commitment to sourcing broomcorn, handles, and embellishments regionally means every broom created carries a touch of Salem’s environment and spirit. Over the course of an hour, families collaborate closely, guided by patient instructors who help transform natural materials into personalized brooms adorned with silk ribbons, charms, dried flowers, and even bones, fostering creativity and connection. This workshop is uniquely designed as a collaborative family activity rather than an individual craft, encouraging parents and children to work side by side. Children aged 5 and older are welcome to join, provided they are accompanied by attentive adults, who assist with the fine motor skills needed to weave and shape the broomcorn. The Witchery offers a warm, inclusive atmosphere, welcoming LGBTQIA+ families and providing adaptive support for participants with disabilities. What sets this workshop apart is not just the craft but the experience: the chance to engage with Salem’s witchcraft culture directly and create meaningful keepsakes that embody the city’s magic and history. The surrounding area, known for its colonial architecture and waterfront charm, invites families to explore Salem’s other attractions seamlessly before or after their workshop. Visitors should plan to arrive early to select from a range of natural embellishments and receive a full introduction to the materials. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes and clothing suitable for hands-on work are recommended. The Witchery also encourages sustainability and local business support, making this not only a creative outing but an environmentally thoughtful one. Whether you’re local or traveling to Salem, the Family Broom Making Workshop offers a unique blend of craft, culture, and family bonding.
