The ferry cuts through turquoise like a pen across paper; spray cools your face while the island of Cozumel grows larger, its reef edges dark against the sea. On day one you test the water along Riviera Maya reefs — shallow coral gardens, sandy channels and swim-throughs — then return to Playa del Carmen. Day two moves you across to Cozumel where the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef pushes outward, walls and ledges dropping into blue that seems to swallow light.
