History

The Costa Brava coastline was shaped by geological uplift and a long fishing tradition; 19th–20th century seaside development added fashionable villas and promenades to the rugged shore.

Conservation

The area includes sensitive seagrass (posidonia) meadows; guides emphasize no-touch snorkeling, reef-safe sunscreen, and packing out all waste to protect marine life.

Adventure tips

Bring a swim-capable mindsetYou must be able to swim to join; if you’re uneasy, request a wetsuit and brief flotation practice from the guide before leaving shore.

Protect from the sunLong exposure on the open water intensifies UV—use reef-safe sunscreen, a brimmed hat for shore, and polarized sunglasses for glare reduction.

Footwear mattersWear sturdy water shoes for rocky launches and beach exits—sandals don’t protect against sharp rock or sea urchins.

Pace your hydration and energyBring a small reusable water bottle for between activities and eat the picnic to keep energy steady for the afternoon free time.

Recommended gear

Swimsuit and quick-dry layers: Wear garments that dry quickly and are comfortable under a wetsuit if you choose one.
Reef shoes / water shoes: Protect your feet on rocky launches, slippery steps, and shallow reefs when snorkeling.
Reef-safe sunscreen and lip balm: Protect skin from strong Mediterranean sun and avoid chemicals that harm marine life.
Light windbreaker or rash guard: Blocks wind on the open water and provides extra warmth after swims or as the sun dips.
