Colin Woodward in Newport: Nations Apart and Regional Cultures Explained

At the Colony House in Washington Square, Newport, RI, a single lecture can reframe how you see the map of the United States. The Newport Historical Society hosts a book talk by Colin Woodward for Nations Apart: How Clashing Regional Cultures Shattered America, a sharp, data-driven examination of the regional forces that shape American politics and social life. The event runs about an hour, usually from 6:00–7:00 PM, and is as much a civic conversation as a book signing. Washington Square is one of Newport’s most atmospheric public rooms: brick sidewalks, 18th‑century facades, and the close coastal arc of Narragansett Bay folding into view a block away. The Colony House, a historic meeting place, provides an intimate setting where local history and present-day debate meet. Expect rows of chairs under warm lights, a podium, and the low hum of neighbors arriving from nearby Cliff Walks, waterfront parks, and the city’s famed colonial houses. Woodward’s book zeroes in on regional cultures—why different parts of America think and vote differently—using original data and historical context to explain structural pressures and geopolitical vulnerabilities. Attend to hear concise examples, a Q&A that tests local perspectives, and a bridge-building argument that looks ahead to civic renewal. For travelers, the talk is a chance to trade the typical maritime postcards of Newport for a deeper understanding of the country while standing in a place that helped shape New England civic life. Practical details matter: ticket prices are $20 for non-Newport Historical Society members, $15 for members and military (active or retired), and $10 for students with ID. The stated meeting point is Colony House, Washington Square, Newport, RI — arrive early to find street parking or use nearby municipal lots. The talk is indoors and low-impact physically, so it fits easily into an afternoon of walking the harbor, touring historic mansions, or catching a sunset over the bay. Why this talk is a standout: Newport’s long public culture—its preserved squares, museums, and lecture tradition—makes it an ideal place to interrogate national divides. You’ll walk away with concrete historical data, a recommended reading list, and a fresh international lens on local coastal life. For visitors who want more than a sightseeing snapshot, Colin Woodward’s talk at the Colony House is an hour that expands how you experience this harbor city and the country it sits within. Settle into the Colony House with a sense of place: Newport sits on rocky coastal ledges that frame Narragansett Bay and has been a regional port since the 17th century. Between talks, browse nearby bookstores and museums run by the Newport Historical Society, or stroll to a harbor viewpoint to watch sailboats and hear how local geography shapes New England life.
