You rise before dawn in Arequipa and the Andes open up like a raw map of stone and sky. The bus drops you at Cabanaconde and the trail immediately plunges—switchbacks folding into light and shadow—as you descend toward a ribbon of green at the canyon floor. At midday the oasis at Sangalle feels like a relief the land offers you: palm shade, a pool, and the hush of irrigation channels daring you to stop and breathe.

Yes—altitude is significant (3,300–2,225 m on the trail, higher at viewpoints). Acclimatize in Arequipa, hydrate, ascend slowly and consult a physician about medication if you have concerns.
