You arrive at dawn in San Francisco, the city still damp from bay fog, and a shuttle eases south along Highway 1. The ocean keeps pace at your flank — a rolling companion that dares you to look away — until a family-run ranch appears on a low bluff and horses lift their heads from the grass.
moderate.
5 hours.
Moderate fitness: able to mount/dismount, sit for 60–90 minutes on horseback, and walk stairs at Alcatraz.
No prior experience is required; guides provide instruction and lead groups at a steady pace suitable for beginners.
Yes, Alcatraz ferry and prison tickets are included; they often sell out months ahead and require advance booking to avoid cancellation.
Complimentary pickup is offered from San Francisco hotels, but drop-off after the tour is not included — you’ll be left at the Alcatraz ferry terminal.
Riders must be at least 7 years old and under 200 lb; the operator may decline riders for safety or health reasons.
The beach stables continue a regional equestrian tradition tied to small coastal ranches; Alcatraz’s prison era (1934–1963) sits atop a longer maritime and military history.
Stay on marked trails and beaches to protect nesting shorebirds and dune vegetation; coastal erosion and human traffic put pressure on fragile terraces.
Alcatraz Tours operates guided outdoor trips and adventures with an emphasis on safety, stewardship, and memorable experiences.
