A cool wind moves through the pines as the group leaves the monastery of Sant Joan de Penyagolosa, then narrows into the north channel where the mountain tightens and the route becomes a series of hands-on moves. The massif feels deliberate here—the ridges push up like folded limestone ribs and the north face dares you into a steep, stony corridor that rewards persistence with an open summit and long views across Castellón.
challenging.
8–10 hours.
Good to very good cardiovascular fitness with experience on steep, rocky trails and scrambling required
The north channel is steep with loose rock and short exposed scrambles; it’s challenging and best for experienced hikers comfortable with route-finding and hands-on moves.
There’s no sustained technical climbing, but a helmet is recommended for loose rock and some operators provide via ferrata-style equipment if needed.
Not recommended—participants should have a high level of fitness and prior scrambling experience; the operator lists it as physically hard.
Late spring through early autumn offers stable trails, but avoid hot summer afternoons and late-season storms; check local weather before you go.
The hermitage at Sant Joan has long been a pilgrimage waypoint; the mountain has cultural significance for local shepherding and religious traditions.
The limestone vegetation and thin soils are fragile—stick to established trails, pack out all waste, and avoid campfires to protect flora and reduce erosion.
