Step aboard a low-slung, wood-paneled salon boat and feel the city slow as you glide beneath low brick bridges and past gabled merchant houses. The guide—easy to spot in orange—threads stories of commerce, canals and living on the water into the steady clink of glassware. A hostess circulates with Dutch cheese and drinks, making the hour an intimate introduction to Amsterdam’s central canals.

Amsterdam’s canal ring was laid out during the 17th-century Golden Age as a planned expansion for trade and housing, shaping the city’s distinctive concentric layout.
Canal health and water quality are managed through municipal programs; visitors should avoid littering and respect private houseboat moorings to minimize impact.
