You start on a cool farm track outside Clarens, boots dampened by morning mist, the Caledon’s tributary daring you to follow its riffled edge. Rock-strewn kloofs tighten, sandstone walls smooth into small caves, and the first ochre figures appear — faint human-animal hybrids watching from sheltering overhangs.
