Explore pivotal sites, uncover the stories of secession, and delve into the transatlantic slave trade. Experience the profound impact of the Civil War and the ongoing struggle for racial equality in America.

About

In December of 1860 our country was divided equally into slave holding and free states.

The institution of slavery was the central issue of the time. The country had just elected Abraham Lincoln the first Republican President of the United States causing South Carolina to lead eleven southern states to secede and form the Confederate States of America. The result was the deadliest war in American History, the Civil War.

Join a two-hour tour hosted by a four generation Charlestonian viewing some of the sites and learning about the people who played a part in the secession and early hostilities. Discover wartime Charleston and the unique events that happened here. Hear about the origins and details of the transatlantic slave trade. Learn about the slave experience as they were taken from their homeland, made the journey across the South Atlantic, and lived in a new and strange land. Listen to what it was like to grow up during the Civil Rights Era of the Mid-Twentieth century as the nation and Charleston struggled with racial inequality.
