After a lunch break, the group checks in at Silent World Dive Center by 1:15 PM for a guided boat snorkel that visits protected patch reefs and shallow mangrove channels. Look for colorful damselfish, sergeant majors, wrasses and spiny urchins on coral heads; in the mangroves watch for juvenile snappers and gobies sheltering among prop roots. The reefs here are living limestone-coral structures—fragile, low-profile patch reefs and spur-and-groove formations typical of the upper Keys—so the program emphasizes buoyant snorkeling and hands-off observation. Because surveys are designed to be completed from the surface, the experience is accessible for families and older adults. REEF interns demonstrate how fish silhouettes, behavior and field marks change with viewing angle, and how a small waterproof camera can help with later identification.
