Before dawn in Cusco the minivan slips through cold light, climbing past terraced fields and scrubby puna toward the Chonta ridge. The air thins and opens; cliffs cut by ancient rivers reveal a wide, raw canyon where Andean condors wheel on thermal winds. You arrive at a small Andean settlement, lace up your boots and hike an ascending hour across grass and rocky trail to three carved viewpoints that face the canyon — places designed to make the condor’s glide feel close enough to touch.
moderate.
12–13 hours.
Should be comfortable walking uphill for up to an hour at altitude and standing for long observation periods; moderate cardiovascular fitness recommended.
The walk from Chonta town to the viewpoint area takes roughly 45–60 minutes uphill; expect additional short walks between viewpoints.
Clear dry-season mornings (May–September) often produce stronger thermals and better visibility, but sightings aren’t guaranteed—guides know local patterns to maximize chances.
The tour requires uneven footing and uphill hiking; travelers with significant mobility limitations are not recommended though short alternatives may be possible—check with the operator.
Bring sun protection, comfortable walking shoes, a water bottle, a camera, and small local currency for any extra purchases at stops.
Killarumiyoq and Tarawasi are pre-Columbian centers—Killarumiyoq aligns with celestial observations while Tarawasi retains an usnu (ceremonial platform) used in Andean ritual practice.
Condors are a vulnerable species; maintain distance and silence during sightings, and follow leave-no-trace practices to protect fragile high-altitude grasslands.
