You step out of the van into a thin, cold light and Chimborazo’s flanks loom like a slow-moving mountain of time. The air bites; the páramo grasses ripple and the first refuge — a compact stone outpost — sits like a human waypoint between lowland green and glaciated heights. On day one you move up from trail to tundra, the volcano daring you to keep climbing as the silhouette of the Andes tightens around you.

Chimborazo is Ecuador’s highest peak by summit distance from the center of the Earth, carved from volcanic uplift and glacial polish. The ride afterward descends through agricultural ridges into Baños de Agua Santa, a town born around hot springs and the Pastaza River. Baños marries an adventurous streak — cable cars, swing viewpoints, rafting — with a local culture shaped by mountain farming and Catholic pilgrimage; the Casa del Árbol swing gives a clear, visceral view of an active landscape.
Expect steep, rocky páramo trails, short hikes at high altitude (refuge to Condor Cocha), and dramatic waterfalls like Pailón del Diablo where the river pushes and pulls through a carved rock bowl. Practicalities matter: acclimatize, layer for wind and sun, and plan for quick weather changes. The itinerary blends a 2–3 hour high-altitude hike with relaxed sightseeing, hot springs, and short activity options in Baños. Bring sunscreen, a wind shell, and water — the mountain rewards patience and respect with clear light, condensed vistas, and the kind of quiet that proves altitude and persistence are worth it.
challenging.
2 days.
Good cardiovascular fitness recommended; even short hikes are strenuous above 4,000 m so acclimatization helps
The itinerary includes a short ascent from the first refuge toward Condor Cocha—steep and thin air make it challenging despite short distance; pace slowly and watch for altitude symptoms.
No technical climbing gear is required for the described hikes and viewpoints; crampons or ropes are not part of this tour’s standard itinerary.
Yes — one night in Baños at a tourist-class hotel with breakfast is included; upgrades may be available for an extra fee.
Children may join, but infants must sit on laps during transport; consult organizers about altitude tolerance for young children.
Chimborazo has cultural significance for Andean communities and was a landmark for early European explorers; its prominence shaped local agriculture and settlement patterns.
The páramo ecosystem is fragile—stick to trails, avoid feeding wildlife, and support local guides who follow sustainable practices to minimize erosion and disturbance.
