You step onto a small catamaran as the fjord narrows and the cliffs pull the light into bands of shadow and gloss. The boat hums along Lynn Canal for roughly 45 minutes, and every turn opens another frame: a bald eagle on a spruce, a river slicing silver through alder, a mountain catching a breath of cloud. Your guide—also a working photographer—keeps one eye on the light and the other on where wildlife chooses to appear.

The tour includes a 45-minute catamaran shuttle between Skagway and Haines; boarding begins 15 minutes before departure so allow extra time for tendering or bus transfers from cruise ships.
Common sightings include bald eagles, sea lions along the fjord, and in season (late summer) pink salmon runs that attract brown bears and other predators—sightings are seasonal and cannot be guaranteed.
A basic DSLR or mirrorless camera with a mid-telephoto and a wide lens covers most situations; guides assist with composition, so advanced skills are not required.
Tours can be canceled for safety in bad weather; bring waterproof clothing and be prepared for flexible shooting locations—guides will adapt to current conditions or reschedule per the operator’s cancellation policy.
The Chilkat Valley lies within traditional Tlingit territory and was a seasonal harvest area; later 19th-century trade and mining routes connected it to coastal towns like Haines and Skagway.
Guides follow bear-aware viewing practices and encourage leave-no-trace principles; staying on established paths and packing out waste reduces disturbance to spawning salmon and riparian habitats.
