The day opens with a roar of engines and a spray of red-earth as ATVs push out of a village road into the foothills above Chiang Mai. Tracks thread past rice paddies (seasonal), splash through shallow streams and climb to ridgelines where the mountains ahead—Doi Inthanon, the highest point in Thailand—dominate the skyline.
