Central Park was established in the 1850s by Olmsted and Vaux as America’s first large-scale public park, reshaping former hilltops, farms, and quarries into designed landscape.
The Central Park Conservancy manages the park’s restoration and maintenance; visitors are asked to stay on paths, handle waste responsibly, and respect horses and equine areas.
