Central Park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in the 1850s as a planned public landscape created atop Manhattan bedrock and reshaped glacial terrain.
The park relies on volunteer groups and the Central Park Conservancy for maintenance; staying on paths and packing out waste helps protect plantings and water features.
