The boat engines cough to life in Bayahibe as the harbor slides behind you and the Caribbean stretches into a field of turquoise. On a full-day dive charter to Catalina Island you split the day between two reef sites—submerged ridges and coral gardens where parrotfish and grouper patrol the drop-offs—and a slow, sun-warmed hour on the island’s beach for lunch and music.
moderate.
8 hours.
Moderate fitness—able to climb boat ladders, surface-swim and manage gear; some experience with boat diving recommended
Most trips expect certified divers; check with the operator if they offer an introductory dive program—otherwise bring your Open Water certification card.
Typical bottom times depend on no‑decompression limits and air consumption but expect two dives of roughly 40–50 minutes each, adjusted for depth and conditions.
Many operators offer pickup from major resorts for an additional fee—confirm pickup points and times when booking.
Tours usually cancel for unsafe sea conditions; this operator’s policy allows a full refund if cancelled at least 24 hours prior or for bad weather.
Catalina lies on a coral platform historically used by local fishers; tourism developed mid‑20th century as La Romana and Bayahibe connected to international resorts.
Reef health varies—support operators that use mooring buoys, avoid touching coral, and promote reef‑safe products to minimize impact.
