You wake before dawn and the transfer van threads through a low, lunar horizon where stone has been coaxed into chimneys, cones and honeycombed walls. At the takeoff field near Çat village, envelopes inflate like great, slow breaths; pilots check burners and wind, and the valley answers by nudging the balloons along invisible corridors.

Landings can be firm depending on wind; pilots aim for smooth touchdowns but you should be prepared to brace briefly and follow crew instructions.
Cappadocia’s soft volcanic tuff was settled for millennia; many caves and churches date to Byzantine and earlier periods when people carved living spaces into the stone.
