Caserta and Monte Cassino Abbey art, history and culture
You’ll enjoy a guided tour of the Royal Palace of Caserta (optional guide if wanted), then on to Monte Cassino for a tour of the Abbey (a chance to buy some honey still made by the Benedictine Monks who live there), and a visit to the war cemeteries nearby
Caserta is famous for its Royal Palace built from 1751 to 1776 by King Charles of Bourbon Why did it take 25 years to build? Because it’s a magnificent, colossal wonder of architectural splendor with a vast complex of gardens, featuring ponds and fountains, and stretches 3km deep into the surrounding hills. The rustic monastery of Monte Cassino is in complete contrast with the splendor of Caserta Palace
Perched at the summit of the mountain, this huge fortress-like structure was demolished to the ground by aerial bombing in 1944,
killing the many authorities and civilians who had been inside; their resting places can be visited in the nearby war cemeteries. With over 4,000 in the British graveyard alone, we can only imagine the utter devastation the bombing caused. The monastery has been completely reconstructed after an aerial bombing in 1944, and restored to its former glory; we can only imagine how it must’ve looked like originally, with all the frescoes and mosaics intact.
At the end of the tour, you will return to Naples Port, in time to board your cruise ship.
