This multi-day itinerary follows sections of the Carian Trail across the Bozburun Peninsula and Gökova Bay. Geologically the coast is largely limestones and karst, producing white rock shelves, caves and sharp ridgelines; perched ruins—Hydas, Amos, Loryma—point to a history of Carian and Greek settlements that used the bays as natural harbors. Local villages such as Turgut, Bayır and Selimiye still tend olives and artisanal fishing, and simple tea gardens offer practical respite.
Expect 4–6 hours of walking on most days with staged transfers and luggage transported between hotels. Typical day hikes are 11–15 km with climbs up to ~950 m on the steepest day (Mount Sakar). Trails mix rocky coastal singletrack, forested mule paths and short paved stretches; swims in sheltered bays are an easy reward. Guides provide route notes and some site admissions; group size is small and support includes airport transfers from Dalaman.
Plan lightweight waterproof footwear with firm soles, 2–3 liters of water capacity, sun protection and layered clothing for cooler ridge winds. Best seasons are spring and autumn for comfortable temperatures and flowering maquis; summer offers swimming but hotter trail conditions. With moderate fitness you can enjoy spectacular views, ancient amphitheatres and the steady interplay of land and sea.
moderate.
7–8 days.
Moderate endurance—regular hikers who can manage consecutive 4–6 hour days with 300–900 m of ascent.
A moderate fitness level is required; expect consecutive days of 4–6 hours walking with ascents up to ~950 m on the hardest day.
Swimming is not formally scheduled but many days end at sheltered bays (Kumlubük, Loryma) where you can take a dip—bring a towel and quick-dry layers.
No—luggage is transported between hotels; you only need a daypack for essentials on trail days.
Spring (April–June) and fall (September–October) offer the best combination of temperatures, lower crowds and flowering maquis; summer is hot but ideal for swimming.
The route passes sites from ancient Caria and classical Greek settlements—ruins such as Hydas, Amos and Loryma were coastal strongholds and amphitheatres served maritime communities.
Trail sections cross fragile maquis and karst; stick to marked routes, avoid collecting flora and limit campfires to reduce erosion and fire risk.
