A cool marine wind meets the minivan as you peel out of Cape Town and follow the Atlantic coastline. Windows frame a changing coastline: the serrated ridges of the Twelve Apostles, the narrow ribbon of Chapman's Peak Drive, and the wide sweep of Noordhoek Beach. By midday the penguin colony at Boulders Beach fills the shoreline with curious, waddling birds; later, the Cape Point lighthouse perches on wind-rocked cliffs above the ocean where two major currents tug at the sea.
