The convoy pulls out of Moab before sun is fully up, tires whispering on red dirt as the town’s neon signs shrink behind ridgelines. By midmorning the pavement gives way to a rutted 4x4 track and the landscape loosens its grip: sandstone fins and stubby junipers rise like punctuation marks across a flat, high desert page. Your guide kills the engine at a viewpoint and the silence presses in — wind moving through pinyon and sage, a distant crow calling — and the Needles announce themselves with vertical stripes of orange, cream and rust.
