You step off the transfer and the air changes: humid, green, and threaded with birdcalls. Tall secondary forest rises around the ranch, branches fanning above wooden platforms where guides clip you into pulleys. The canopy tugs at you with speed and exposure; downstream the Sarapiquí River glares and then laughs as it runs over rocks and through narrow rapids.
