Join Glencairn Museum members and staff for a day trip to the Newark Museum of Art (NMOA), New Jersey’s largest fine art museum, founded in 1909 with the then-radical belief that art and learning are for everyone.
We will travel in comfort aboard a 56-passenger motorcoach equipped with free WiFi, charging ports at every seat, a restroom, and a PA system. En route, Asian art expert Terri McNichol will provide background on Buddhism to enhance our experience at NMOA.
Upon arrival, half of our group will take part in the Tibetan Art in Depth guided tour, featuring a stunning Buddhist altar created between 1988–1991 by Tibetan artist Phuntsok Dorje and consecrated by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. The other half will explore the historic Ballantine House through self-guided or audio tours. Built in 1885 by the Ballantine Brewing family, this 27-room mansion combines preserved period rooms with gallery spaces exploring Newark’s cultural history and diverse communities.
The groups will then switch tours so that everyone has the opportunity to experience both.
Afterward, attendees can enjoy lunch either at the museum’s on-site café or bring their own. There will also be time to explore more of the museum on your own before we head back to Bryn Athyn.
Reserve your seat ahead of time to ensure availability, especially during weekends and holidays.
Expect to walk and stand for a few hours while exploring the museum galleries.
Review the Newark Museum's policies on photography and food to avoid inconvenience.
Museum interiors and the bus can be cool, so layering is recommended.
The Glencairn Museum, organizer of this trip, is itself a historical site showcasing religious art and artifacts connected to the local community.
Both Bryn Athyn and the museum promote sustainability with eco-friendly transit options and energy-efficient building practices.
Supportive shoes make museum exploration comfortable during extended walking periods.
Ideal for layering inside air-conditioned buses and chilly museum galleries.
