Situated near Taihape, this rugged landscape is defined by sweeping farmland, rolling hills, and dense native bush – a varied backdrop that calls for confident riders ready to push their skills. The Burn the Breeze ride is a half-day journey that moves briskly across expansive trails, giving riders the freedom to find rhythm in exhilarating canters far from the pressures of traffic and towns. It’s a chance to truly connect with powerful steeds across terrain that tests balance and timing against natural obstacles like creek crossings and shifting soil.
What makes this ride distinct is its focus on riders aged 13 and older who have the experience to manage a spirited trek. With essential gear like helmets, riding boots, leather chaps, and weather-ready oilskin coats provided, riders just need to bring sturdy pants and a readiness for speed. The 3-hour schedule features departures at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., perfectly timed to catch the cooler stretches of the day.
The region itself offers rich biodiversity, including native birds such as tui and kererū, and glimpses of New Zealand’s signature greenery like silver ferns and manuka brush. Taihape holds a modest place in history as the nation’s gumboot throwing capital, and its rugged setting nurtures a community proud of outdoor pursuits and conservation.
River Valley Ventures enriches this local outdoor scene by catering to advanced riders wanting a lively, adrenaline-fueled trek that’s both challenging and grounded in solid horsemanship. This isn’t a gentle trail ride; instead, it’s an invitation to harness speed, navigate natural variation, and come away with stories that match the wildness of the land.
