The bell of the Belfry tolls in the distance, barges drift like slow thoughts along the Dijver, and facades—scarred by time but proud—offer clues tucked into carvings and plaques.

Bruges was a major medieval textile and trading hub; many of the guildhouses and market squares you encounter date to the 12th–15th centuries and reflect the city’s Hanseatic-era prosperity.
High foot traffic and tourism pressure mean visitors should stick to paths, avoid touching fragile stonework, and support local businesses mindful of preservation efforts.
