You step off the boat and the lagoon flattens into glass; the guide straps a clear diving helmet over your shoulders and suddenly the reef compresses into color and motion below. The helmet keeps your head dry while your feet find the sandy bottom at about three meters — you walk, breathe normally and come face-to-face with parrotfish, clownfish and the occasional turtle as sunlight fractures through the water.
