Nature, Legends & Hidden Trails Though it's the youngest national park in the Czech Republic, this region is steeped in history. You'll find medieval castle ruins from the 14th century nestled among dramatic rock formations and dense, green woods. Along the way, you'll encounter some of the most picture-perfect spots in Europe – so keep your camera ready!
Your hike begins in Saxon Switzerland, just across the German border, where the legendary Bastei Bridge awaits. Perched high above the Elbe River, this dramatic stone bridge connects towering rock pinnacles and offers spectacular views over the canyon and the rolling hills of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Originally made of wood in the 19th century, the current sandstone structure blends seamlessly into its surroundings, making it one of the most photographed spots in Germany. As you stand above the cliffs, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into a fantasy world.
Next, cross back into the Czech side to reach the highlight of Bohemian Switzerland: the magnificent Pravčická Arch (Pravčická brána). This natural sandstone arch — the largest of its kind in Europe — rises majestically from the forest and forms a gateway through which nature seems to breathe. Surrounded by steep rock towers and deep valleys, the area around the gate offers several scenic viewpoints where you’ll stop to take in panoramic views of the national park. This section includes a steady uphill hike, but the reward is more than worth it — a truly iconic and humbling sight.
After the high viewpoints, it’s time to descend into a peaceful hidden world: the Wild Gorge. This narrow canyon, carved over millennia by the Kamenice River, is accessible only by small wooden boats. Hop aboard for a tranquil ride through mossy cliffs, hanging greenery, and trickling waterfalls. The silence and beauty of the gorge provide a magical contrast to the dramatic rock formations above — the perfect way to wind down your adventure.
