The hide is low and close to the lagoon; you arrive with the smell of salt and reed, toes on a wooden boardwalk, and a glass of binoculars between your palms. Tidal flats spill like a moving plain as Knot and Sanderling probe the edges, flamingoes wheel in a pale arc, and an osprey occasionally pauses over the channel, talons ready.

Spring and autumn migrations bring the greatest variety; low tides at sunrise or late afternoon give the closest views of feeding waders.
The Langebaan Lagoon area has been used seasonally by Indigenous peoples for millennia; later it became important to regional fishing communities and now is protected for its ecological value.
