About This Adventure

Experience the magic of a 2-hour after-dark kayak tour in Deer Harbor, where you’ll paddle through glowing waters filled with bioluminescent plankton. This unique adventure offers a chance to witness nature's light show, enhanced by the moonless nights. With limited spots available, secure your place for an unforgettable evening on the Salish Sea.

Join us on a 2-hour after-dark kayak tour through sheltered Deer Harbor as we search for fantastic, glowing plankton. The San Juan Islands have significant tidal exchanges that create strong upwellings. These conditions make our water rich with nutrients, providing a diverse habitat for microorganisms. Some of these have the ability to create their own light (similar to fireflies).

Stirring of the water by animals, fish, and our paddle strokes causes a reactive glow. These microorganisms are most numerous following long, sunny days and most visible around new moons. Sightings are common, but vary in intensity and are never guaranteed. To maximize the best sightings, we offer these tours during the darkest nights of the moon each month. Trips are limited to 8 participants, so book early to experience a natural light show from the depths of the Salish Sea.

Shearwater provides 2-person kayaks, all necessary kayaking gear, dry storage bags, basic instruction and guide service.

All of our tours include about 30 minutes of gear adjustment and basic instruction. Expect about 1½ hours on the water on this tour.
