You step onto Santa Monica Boulevard at the Beverly Hills sign and the city shifts around you: palms lift their fronds, polished shopfronts reflect a bright Los Angeles sky, and the pavement hums with purposeful footsteps. Beverly Hills evolved from 19th-century lima bean farms and early rail yards into a 20th-century residential enclave and luxury retail district; a 1920s racetrack once drew huge crowds nearby.
