The morning boat cuts across the Bali Sea and Nusa Penida rises from the horizon — sheer cliffs first, then a scatter of beaches and reef-blue inlets. On arrival the island’s wind and salt have a directness to them: waves carving arches at Broken Beach, a natural pool at Angel’s Billabong that shimmers when the tide allows, and Kelingking’s famous headland dropping toward a ribbon of sand.
