Edinburgh’s Old Town grew along the Royal Mile from Castle Rock, a volcanic plug that has hosted fortifications since prehistoric times; the medieval street pattern remains largely intact.
Small-group tours reduce crowding on fragile cobbles and historic sites; visitors should stay on public paths, avoid climbing monuments, and pack out litter to protect the Old Town.
