A road unfurls north from Baku and the Caspian flattens behind you; the driver slows as a squat, five-fingered ridge rises from scrub and shale. At Beshbarmag (Five-Finger Mountain) the rock gestures toward the sea — a compact limestone monolith that has guided caravans and fishermen for centuries. Later, the candy-striped slopes of Khizi open like a geological sketchbook: bands of pink, white and beige that were laid down, folded and eroded into stripes revealing tiny fossilized shells.
