Barefoot Hootenanny Riverfront Music & Camping Festival on the Waccamaw

On the banks of the Waccamaw River in Longs, South Carolina, the Barefoot Hootenanny gathers three days of music, paddling, and community. Hosted by River Island Adventures and The Goofy Footers, this riverfront festival combines two stages of live performances with workshops, kayaking, local food trucks, artisan vendors, and multiple camping options on a private island outpost and adjacent woodlands. The setting is a working blackwater river corridor where loblolly pines, cypress knees, and palmettos edge slow-moving channels. Key features here include the festival’s two performance stages, a private island for paddlers to explore, woodsy tent camping, a vehicle camping field for Park + Camp, and an RV area marked Unplugged RV Camping. The Waccamaw’s dark tannin-stained water and low, riverine floodplain create wide marshy banks and quiet eddies ideal for beginner and casual paddling, while the shorelines host great blue herons, kingfishers, and occasional otters. At its heart the Hootenanny is practical and social: communal campfire rings, hot showers at the outpost, and designated cooking areas make overnight stays comfortable even without luxurious hookups. Organizers emphasize first-come, first-served parking rules for vehicle and RV spaces—plan to arrive together with your group, because once parked you can’t re-enter the camping field during the event. Volunteers can earn admission with a short shift, and family-friendly pricing includes free youth admission for ages 15 and under. Why this festival stands out is how it layers music and place. Rather than a cleared field with a stage, performances float between trees and river views; hands-on workshops on paddle technique meet late-night jam circles by the water. Vendor offerings highlight locally caught seafood and Southern comfort food—expect East Coast oysters and shrimp alongside roast beef sandwiches. Practical tips: bring a footprint and respect campsite spacing, secure valuables in locked vehicles in the parking field, and prepare for limited cell service ("adventure" is the Wi-Fi password onsite). The experience suits campers who want music and outdoor energy without losing the comforts of showers and organized amenities. For travelers based in Longs or nearby Myrtle Beach, the Hootenanny offers an approachable, socially spirited weekend to paddle, eat, and dance on one of South Carolina’s quieter rivers. Weekend admission offers flexibility: Weekend Day Passes give access across Friday afternoon through Sunday evening, with the festival schedule typically running from mid-afternoon into late night on Friday and full days Saturday and Sunday. Camping packages—Woodsy Tent Camping, Park + Camp, and Unplugged RV Camping—range from rustic wooded plots to non-powered RV spaces; note parked vehicles cannot exit and re-enter during the event. Expect rotating food trucks like Mr. Fish and Beefy Trio, and paddle to the island at dawn when the river is glass-still and birdlife is active today.
