A salt wind hits first — sharp, briny and cool as the small boat threads past rust-stained rock faces. Seabirds wheel and call; sea lions haul themselves onto jagged ledges as the guide points toward the Ballestas Islands. The islands’ black basalt cliffs and the famous Candelabro geoglyph feel ancient, a shoreline that keeps its own rhythms.

The Paracas coast has long been a maritime resource for pre‑Columbian cultures; the Candelabro geoglyph predates modern mapping, and Ica’s pisco tradition dates to colonial vineyards established in the 16th century.
The Ballestas lie adjacent to Paracas National Reserve; visitors should avoid disturbing wildlife, follow guide instructions and minimize plastic use to protect marine ecosystems.
