Operated by The Big Liverpool Bake · Liverpool, England
The Big Bakes invites visitors to roll up their sleeves in Liverpool, England, at 60 Old Hall St, Liverpool L3 9PP, United Kingdom. In a bright marquee staged like a communal kitchen, the British Baking Masterclass — Royal Victoria Sponge is a 2½‑hour, hands‑on class that walks home bakers through every step of producing a feather-light sponge, homemade jam, and rich buttercream.
Stations are arranged in pairs across a marquee fitted with twelve fully equipped baking bays and top-grade ovens. That setup is one of this experience’s strongest features: you work beside a partner, share tasks, and learn practical techniques from instructors who focus on texture, timing, and simple flavor balance. The itinerary moves from measuring and creaming to baking and filling, then to finishing touches before a post-bake tasting in an on-site cocktail bar.
What makes this class a distinct part of Liverpool’s activity scene is its combination of theatrical presentation and practical instruction. The Big Bakes brings a festival-style tent and professional appliances to an urban center, turning an ordinary afternoon into a social culinary workshop. It’s family-friendly and deliberately low-stress: everything you need is provided — ingredients, aprons, a take-home cake box, and even the washing up — which lets guests concentrate on learning and laughing rather than logistics.
Beyond technique, the session offers a short primer on the cake’s place in British food culture. The Victoria Sponge, named for Queen Victoria, became an emblem of afternoon tea in the 19th century, and this class channels that history through hands-on practice and a digital mini recipe e-book to recreate the experience at home.
Practical points matter here. The event lasts about two and a half hours, operates on a ticket-per-person basis with baking in pairs, and includes a complimentary soft drink on arrival. It’s well suited to beginners and casual bakers, and venues can provide a chair on request to improve accessibility. Children may participate under specific supervision rules, so check The Big Bakes’ guidelines when booking.
Why book it? If you’re visiting Liverpool and want an active, social indoor experience that produces something edible to share, this masterclass delivers. It’s an ideal option for couples, families, small groups, or anyone who wants a hands-on introduction to a classic British cake. Leave the mess to the hosts, take home a warm sponge and a recipe, and carry a new set of baking skills out into your kitchen.
Options to upgrade are available: a House Cocktail or Prosecco on arrival (non‑alcoholic choices offered), limited‑edition souvenir pins, and a Luxury Gift Box with a rose‑gold cake slice and baker’s hat for special occasions. The class also hands out a mini recipe e‑book so your first sponge isn’t the last.
