You wake before dawn in Cusco, the city’s light thinning as the van climbs toward the high tundra — the air grows colder and the skyline is punctured by the massive silhouette of Nevado Ausangate. By the time you reach Pacchanta, steam still rises from the hot springs and the first lagoons glitter like scattered gems above 4,500 m.
moderate.
12–15 hours.
Should be comfortable walking on uneven terrain for several hours and able to cope with high-altitude exertion; not suitable for unacclimatized individuals with serious cardiopulmonary issues.
Transport is about 3–3.5 hours each way depending on traffic and stops; expect a full-day (roughly 12–15 hours) itinerary.
The walking between lagoons is moderately paced on high-elevation trails; the main challenge is altitude rather than technical terrain.
Soaking is optional: the tour provides time in Pacchanta and a local restaurant lunch, but hot springs entry may be optional or locally priced—confirm at booking.
No special permits for the lakes; travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation is recommended.
The Ausangate massif is sacred in Andean cosmology and historically marked seasonal grazing routes and pilgrimage circuits for Quechua communities.
This fragile high-Andean environment is sensitive to foot traffic and litter; visitors should stay on trails, pack out waste, and respect local grazing areas to limit erosion and ecological disturbance.
