Aurora Masterclass: Private Northern Lights Photography Workshop Near Fairbanks, Alaska

On cold nights a few dozen miles northeast of Fairbanks, in the small community of Salcha, Alaska, the sky can explode into color. Aurora Masterclass is a private, six-hour photography workshop led by award-winning wilderness photographer Todd Whetstine, designed to put you under the Northern Lights and teach you to capture them. Operating in Interior Alaska’s low-light corridors—flat river flats, black spruce ridgelines and wide horizons—this is an active, field-first lesson that replaces theory with hands-on shooting. The trip begins with a pre-trip check-in and a pickup from Fairbanks-area lodging or a arranged meeting point. On the drive out Todd assesses your camera and experience, then scouts one of his decade-refined locations near the Salcha and Chena river corridors. You’ll set up tripods, frame foregrounds of frosted spruce or open river ice, and dial in shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance and focus while aurora arcs develop overhead. What makes this experience special is the instructor and the site selection. Todd Whetstine brings thousands of nights of northern-light guiding experience and a practical eye for composition under extreme cold. The chosen locations minimize light pollution and emphasize Arctic boreal features: black spruce, braided river channels and wide, dark skies that let the aurora read true on camera sensors. Between shooting sessions the group returns to a warm vehicle for hot drinks, image review and real-time coaching so you can refine settings and framing as the show evolves. Expect long exposure techniques, histogram reading, manual focus under starlight and strategies for composing foreground interest so images feel anchored and intentional. The workshop serves beginner and experienced photographers: Todd tailors instruction to skill level and helps swap theoretical confusion for consistently usable settings. Groups are capped at five guests, preserving one-on-one attention. Practicalities: the session runs about six hours, starts after dark and requires winter layers, a camera with manual controls and a sturdy tripod. The trip is anchored in Salcha, a gateway community in Interior Alaska on traditional Tanana Athabaskan territory. The experience pairs technical training with the raw spectacle of auroral physics—charged solar particles lighting the upper atmosphere—and leaves you with portfolio-ready images captured by your own hands. The workshop accepts photographers age 13 and up and limits groups to five guests, which makes instruction personal, efficient and paced. Scheduling stays flexible—sessions shift with live aurora forecasts and weather so you chase clear skies and peak geomagnetic activity rather than a fixed calendar date. For travelers staying in Fairbanks or nearby villages, Aurora Masterclass is an efficient, focused way to learn night photography, chase the lights beyond town, and convert a night of cold and patient waiting into a stack of teachable moments and images you’ll actually want to print.
