In the backyard of a Pittsburgh house in 1948, six friends gather to mourn Floyd "Schoolboy" Barton, a blues guitarist and singer whose sudden death has cut short a promising career. In flashbacks, Floyd's story and those of the other characters unfolds. Among them, Vera Dotson, the affectionate woman he once abandoned but has come back to win; Louise, her smart and sharp-tongued friend; Hedley, an ill and deeply damaged man; Ruby, an uncommonly attractive young woman who has fled a murderous boyfriend. Each of these seven guitars has a story, and their stories are told in ways to wrench the heart. 1996 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play Nominations: 1995 Pulitzer Prize for Drama; 1996 Tony Award for Best Play
