Rotorua is on the Taupō Volcanic Zone; the area has been an important cultural and geothermal center for Te Arawa iwi for centuries, with historic marae and traditional healing practices tied to the hot springs.
Visitors should respect designated thermal areas and boardwalks to protect fragile geothermal features; minimizing single-use plastics and staying on marked roads helps reduce local impact.
