At Mount Eden (Maungawhau) the summit slope breathes cool air and the crater sits like a dark bowl; when the first light arrives it spreads across Waitematā and the silhouetted ranges, flushing the skyline into sharp detail.

Maungawhau is a prominent volcanic cone and former Māori pa site; its crater and terraces record both geological activity and historical occupation.
Stick to paths to prevent erosion of the volcanic cone and respect sites of cultural importance; local councils run native-planting and pest-control programs to protect urban biodiversity.
