A low wind scours the puna grass as quad tires bite into the red-brown soil, and the high Andes open like a page of living geology. Riders leave Cusco before dawn aboard private transport, then climb into four-wheelers that cut across wide valleys where llamas and alpacas graze and local shepherds wave.
