Before dawn the van slips out of Cusco and the road compresses the city into a rearview memory.
By first light the Andean plateau opens: wind-worn grass, scattered stone corrals and the distant fan of Ausangate’s glaciers. After a country breakfast in Japura the trip switches gears — literal and mental — into ATVs. Riders roll an hour across high puna toward Qosqopata, where engines are parked and boots meet trail.
The final approach is a brisk, exposed ascent of roughly 30–60 minutes on rocky switchbacks to the Rainbow Mountain rim (Vinicunca, ~5,200 m). The ridge reveals the banded striations of iron and mineral oxides — sienna, ochre, and turquoise — set against snow and high peaks. The geology here is recent uplift and glacial polishing that expose oxidized layers; the colors are a surface expression of that long process.
This landscape is also cultural: shepherding Quechua communities have grazed llamas and alpacas here for generations; the tour supports local guides and small eateries in Japura.
Practical edge: expect thin air, strong sun, and shifting weather. Footing is loose and can be icy late into the dry season; the climb gains a few hundred meters of elevation in a short distance. Carry 2+ liters of water, layers for wind and cold, and sunscreen. Allow a full day (early pickup, late return), and be ready for 30–60 minutes of steep walking at altitude after the ATV leg.
